World Retina Day: Inspiring Lights – A Global Call to Raise Awareness of Inherited Retinal Diseases

Retina International is proud to support the Federation of Associations of Inherited Retinal Dystrophies of Spain (FARPE) and its Foundation FUNDALUCE in the Inspiring Lights: We Light Up the Retina campaign for World Retina Day, 2025.

Launched in 2021 in a small town in Extremadura, this initiative has grown rapidly, from 80 municipalities in 2023 to 159 in 2024. In 2025, the campaign will extend beyond Spain, inviting communities worldwide to participate.

On Retina Day, September 28, 2025, towns and cities are encouraged to illuminate a local landmark in blue and green to show solidarity with those affected by inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). The campaign also underscores the need for early diagnosis, equitable access to care, and ongoing investment in research and innovation.

“By illuminating landmarks, the Inspiring Lights campaign not only raises awareness of inherited retinal diseases but also calls attention to the urgent need for early diagnosis, equitable access to care, and sustained investment in research and innovation. It is a powerful reminder that communities and policymakers alike have a role to play in ensuring better outcomes for those living with these conditions.”
