Harmonizing and Designing Novel Endpoints in Degenerative Retinal Diseases to Foster Innovation

Geographic atrophy (GA), an advanced form of dry Age-related Macular Degeneration is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in individuals over 50 years. Currently, only two GA therapies are available in the USA, while none have reached Europe—due to differing clinical trial endpoints criteria set by the FDA and EMA. Although both agencies accept anatomical endpoints, the EMA insists on measures with strong functional correlations. Many ongoing GA trials focus on anatomical outcomes, such as slowing lesion progression, as primary endpoints. However, European regulators question whether a reduction in lesion size translates into meaningful improvements in patients’ day-to-day lives. Therefore, it is crucial for stakeholders to – educate regulators on the nature of the disease, identify functional metrics that correlate with anatomical loss or to develop composite endpoints that better reflect tangible patient benefits.
This SIG meeting will bring together experts from industry, academia, regulatory bodies and patient organizations, to discuss current GA trial endpoints and explore strategies to address these challenges. Audience questions and insights are warmly welcomed.
