The Impact of Inherited Retinal Diseases in the United States of America (US) and Canada from a Cost-of-Illness Perspective.
This study estimated the annual economic and social impact of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) in the United States and Canada in 2019. The findings showed that IRDs create a substantial financial burden through healthcare costs, lost productivity and other economic impacts. However, the largest share of the estimated total cost in both countries was linked to reduced well-being and quality of life for people affected. The study highlights the importance of considering the wider impact of IRDs on individuals, families and society when planning healthcare services and developing policies to improve support and access to care.
