Enhancing Clinician-Patient Communication in Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): Insights from Patients and Clinicians

Enhancing Clinician-Patient Communication in Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): Insights from Patients and Clinicians.

This study explored how communication between healthcare professionals and people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) could be improved.

Patients felt they had only a moderate understanding of AMD and wanted more information about managing the condition, medications, examinations, future vision changes and rehabilitation services. They trusted retinal specialists most but also valued patient organisations. Many preferred conversations and interactive seminars where they could ask questions and learn from others.

Clinicians explained that limited appointment times made it difficult to discuss the disease’s outlook and available support services in detail.
