Clinical Trials

Practical resources

Clinical trials play an important role in advancing research and developing potential new treatments for retinal conditions. Finding and understanding relevant trials can feel overwhelming, whether you are living with a retinal condition, supporting a family member, working in research or advocating for the retina community.

This page brings together trusted resources to help you explore ongoing clinical trials, discover registries for inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) and learn more about retinal research.

What are Clinical Trials?

Understanding Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are research studies that investigate potential treatments, assess their safety and effectiveness, or improve understanding of a condition. For people affected by retinal conditions, trials may explore new therapies, ways to slow vision loss or approaches to preserving sight.

Finding Relevant Trials

Before exploring or joining a clinical trial, consider asking your healthcare professional or research team:

  • Is the trial relevant to my condition or genetic diagnosis?
  • What is the purpose of the study, and what stage is it at?
  • Who can take part, and what are the eligibility criteria?
  • What are the possible benefits, risks and commitments?
  • Where is the trial taking place, and will travel be required?
  • What costs, support or follow-up care may be involved?

Participation in clinical research is voluntary. Discuss any potential trial with an appropriate healthcare professional or research team before making a decision.

Registries for Inherited Retinal Diseases

Registries collect information to support research, improve understanding of conditions and, in some cases, help connect people with research opportunities.
