Expert Consensus on Geographic Atrophy in the EU: A Call for Urgent Policy Action
Expert Consensus on Geographic Atrophy in the EU: A Call for Urgent Policy Action.
This consensus paper explores how geographic atrophy, an eye disease that can cause progressive vision loss, affects patients and their families across Europe. Experts reviewed approaches in Germany, Italy, France and Spain to identify policies that could improve awareness, early detection and support for people affected by the condition. The paper recommends introducing comprehensive eye screening programmes, including retinal disease checks in EU driving licence rules, and developing EU-wide guidance on eye health screening. It highlights the need for coordinated support at European level to help countries strengthen their policies and improve care and outcomes for people living with geographic atrophy.
