The Landscape of Genomic Services for Inherited Retinal Degenerations (IRDs) Across Europe

The Landscape of Genomic Services for Inherited Retinal Degenerations (IRDs) Across Europe.

This study examined the availability of genetic testing and counselling for people with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) across 19 European countries. The findings revealed significant differences in access, costs, insurance coverage and awareness among healthcare professionals and patients. In some countries, genetic counselling services were limited or unavailable, while the cost of testing created barriers for some patients. The study highlights the need for greater awareness, improved access to genetic services and more consistent funding and support across Europe to help patients receive a diagnosis and access potential treatments and clinical trials.
