World Retina Day

World Retina Day is an annual global awareness day held on the last Sunday of September, dedicated to raising awareness of retinal diseases, promoting early diagnosis, advancing research, and advocating for equitable access to treatments and care. It brings together patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and organisations worldwide to champion vision health and improve the lives of people affected by retinal conditions.

Our shared goal

On World Retina Day, we celebrate the work of our members around the world, amplifying their activities, raising awareness of retinal health and highlighting the lived experiences of people affected by retinal conditions. In 2026, we are placed a particular focus on mental health and emotional wellbeing, recognising that the impact of retinal disease extends far beyond vision.

Together, we want to build a future where every person affected by retinal disease is heard, supported and empowered, with their mental health and wellbeing recognised as essential components of care.

Our approach

A Global Challenge

World Retina Day provides an opportunity to bring this work to life by showcasing the initiatives, campaigns and events led by our member organisations worldwide. By sharing their activities and experiences, we strengthen connections across our network, encourage collective action and highlight the diverse ways our community is working to improve lives.
In 2026, our focus is on embedding mental health support within retinal care:
Patient-Led Research

Through our ongoing patient-led research, we are working to better understand the emotional and psychological impact of retinal disease.

Building Evidence Base

We are working to build an evidence base that can inform research, clinical practice and patient support.

Lived Experience

We believe that listening to lived experience is essential to ensuring that care reflects the needs of the whole person, from diagnosis throughout the disease journey.

Why World Retina Day Matters

Retinal diseases can affect far more than sight. They can influence independence, relationships, education, employment, social participation and emotional wellbeing. Yet the psychological impact of living with a retinal condition can remain overlooked, with mental health support not always recognised as an integral part of care. By amplifying the voices and activities of our members, we can strengthen awareness, encourage meaningful collaboration and help drive change towards a future where everyone affected by retinal disease receives the care, understanding and support they need.
