2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine recognises Breakthroughs behind Optogenetics

Retina International congratulates Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, who have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

Their pioneering work has transformed neuroscience by enabling researchers to use light to control the activity of nerve cells with remarkable precision.

For the retinal community, this work is particularly significant as optogenetics is also being explored as an approach to vision restoration in people living with retinal degenerations. Recent research has reported promising findings, while these approaches continue to be studied and developed.

The Nobel recognition highlights how fundamental scientific discoveries can open new avenues for understanding disease and developing potential new approaches to treatment.
