For the patient glaucoma can remain asymptomatic until it is severe, this means the number of affected individuals is much higher than the number known to have it. 

In fact, up to 50% of the ganglion cells can be damaged before there is any effect on vision. At the advanced stage symptoms include side (peripheral) vision loss, and diminished quality of vision.

Open and closed angle glaucoma have different symptoms.

Symptoms of open-angle glaucoma:

• Gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes
• Tunnel vision in the advanced stages

Symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma:

• Severe eye pain
• Nausea and vomiting (accompanying the severe eye pain)
• Sudden onset of visual disturbance, often in low light
• Blurred vision
• Halos around lights
• Reddening of the eye
